Summary
This panel explores how external shocks like pandemics and environmental crises have exposed vulnerabilities in healthcare systems, highlighting the need for resilience, sustainability, and innovation. It invites research on reforms, governance models, digital technologies, and public value creation across micro, meso, and macro levels. Emphasizing diverse methodologies and theoretical frameworks, the panel seeks to advance critical understanding of healthcare management in pursuit of SDG 3 and future-ready public services.
Description
External shocks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and the environmental impact of anthropic activities have uncovered the fragile nature of healthcare systems and their role for sustainability, respectively. Alongside further collaboration between governments and businesses as well as public–private–civil society co-operation, this calls for strategies aimed to foster resilience, well-being, and innovation to create public value(s) that shape the future.
The Special Interest Group (SIG) Healthcare Management (HCM) invites submissions (micro, meso or macro perspectives) on the following (not exclusive) topics faced by the sector:
- Health systems reforms, especially if focused on resilience and sustainability
- New governance models, co-production, and hybrid institutional systems
- Performance measurement/management
- Role of technology and digitalization for value-based healthcare
- Large data, simulation, artificial intelligence (AI)
- (Public) Value creation (e.g., through health promotion)
- Patient-centered organizations/care
- Workforce and industrial relations (including migration)
- Integrated care (including clinical pathways)
- Initiatives targeting chronicity, frailty, multimorbidity
- Emergency and crisis planning/management
- Green healthcare
- Challenges and strategies to achieve SDG 3.
Theoretical framework and methods
The panel welcomes empirical studies (adopting quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches) with a strong linkage to the current literature and the ongoing academic debate. Critical analysis of new and/or innovative methodologies in the analysis of healthcare management are encouraged.
Relevance
The SIG-HCM focuses on cross-fertilization between the fields of healthcare and public management. The panel content enhances the field of public management by promoting avenues for effective and efficient resource allocation, stakeholder engagement, health information management, quality improvement, policy development and implementation, and crisis management. These contributions ultimately aim to enhance public health, improve healthcare delivery, and ensure equitable access to healthcare services for all.
