Strategizing and Entrepreneurship for the Common Good

Rational and goal of the SIG

Scholarship on strategy, strategizing, strategic planning and management is on the rise in the public management community. Scholars from the more generic strategy field as well as leadership and entrepreneurship scholars are increasingly focusing on strategizing for the common good, including topics such as sustainability and ESG. Moreover, scholars from the policy field are increasingly using strategy concepts and applying these to policymaking.

The SIG can offer a home to these scholars, as more traditional management or strategy conference are not likely to offer an explicit, dedicated focus on the common good.

The new SIG will advance the field of Strategizing & Entrepreneurship for the Common Good by providing conceptual foundations for scholarship on these topics; by connecting scholars working on these topics in several disciplinary fields as illustrated above (e.g., public policy, social entrepreneurship, strategic management, collaborative governance); by creating an institutional forum for scholars already working on these topics within the IRSPM community and more in general within the global public administration and management community.

The SIG will collectively pursue the following goals:

  • Highlight the importance of strategizing and entrepreneurship as core features of public management.
  • Connect the strategy, entrepreneurship and leadership scholars (who would typically be at business schools) who focus on the common good with the strategic public management community.
  • Connect the policy scholars (who would typically be at policy schools) who adopt a strategic/strategy perspective in their research with the strategic public management community.
  • Strengthen the strategic public management community by providing a continuous platform for their research (and for knowledge exchange), and potentially expand this platform beyond IRSPM (e.g., special issues, ad hoc seminars, meetings, etc. on top of the annual IRSPM meeting).

Planned activities and events

There will be a panel at IRSPM 2025 in Bologna with several sessions of papers presentations and one open and brainstorming session on the future of our newly established SIG.

A list of international online webinars will also be soon advertised.
